Proud to Receive an MBE… but there’s still much to do – Carole Spiers MBE

At Inspirational Speakers, we love celebrating the achievements of our speakers, and we are delighted to share this latest blog from Carole Spiers MBE.

Carole is an internationally recognised authority on stress management, wellbeing, and workplace resilience, and she has dedicated her career to making a positive difference to people’s lives.

In this blog, Carole reflects on receiving an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List, recognising her outstanding contribution to mental health and stress management. True to her character, Carole also reminds us that while this is a moment of celebration, there is still vital work to be done in supporting wellbeing across organisations and wider society.

I was honoured to be awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King’s Birthday Honours List for services to mental health and stress management. I am both thrilled and deeply humbled to receive this recognition. However, this honour is not mine alone. It reflects a shared mission by so many dedicated professionals and passionate advocates who are working every day to reduce stress and promote wellbeing across organisations and society at large.

Over 30 Years of Championing Stress Awareness

For more than three decades, I’ve been committed to raising awareness of stress and breaking the stigma that still surrounds it. So, have things improved? Yes—but we still have a long way to go.

We are certainly talking more about stress than we used to. Mental health is more openly discussed, and the language around it has evolved. But too many people still feel unable to speak up. The myth persists that stress is a sign of weakness—when in reality, acknowledging it is a sign of strength.

And this brings us to an essential truth: managing stress is a shared responsibility. It doesn’t just sit with the employer. Employees, too, must feel empowered to speak up and speak out. But this can only happen in a healthy workplace culture—one where people feel psychologically safe, where vulnerability is not punished, and where there is no stigma attached to asking for help. When this kind of culture exists, it creates a win–win for both the employer and the employee.

Support Systems Are Improving—But Not Reaching Everyone

Organisations have come a long way. Many now have Employee Assistance Programmes, mental health first aiders, and access to occupational health. These are welcome developments. Yet, despite the support, people continue to slip through the net.

Working from home, for example, brings flexibility but also isolation. Managers no longer have the casual coffee machine conversations that once allowed informal check-ins. A Zoom call might cover a packed agenda—but often skips the simple question: “How are you?” And even when it’s asked, there’s rarely time to listen to the real answer.

Why Are the Signs Still Missed?

It’s easy to blame management for not spotting the signs of stress, burnout, or even suicidal thoughts. But we must remember that many managers are promoted because of their technical expertise (IQ), not necessarily their emotional intelligence (EQ). They may be told they’ll “learn on the job”—but at whose expense?

Leaders need the skills and confidence to manage people with empathy and understanding. And that means investing in training, mentoring, and creating a culture where mental health is taken seriously—every day, not just once a year.

Employees, too, must feel valued—not just for what they do, but for who they are. No one should feel like a number. People want to feel seen, heard, and appreciated for their unique contribution to the organisation. When an employee knows they matter, their motivation and wellbeing rise. It’s not about grand gestures—it’s about consistent respect, meaningful recognition, and a culture that puts people first.

Awareness Weeks Matter—But Culture is Key

As the founder of International Stress Awareness Week, I sometimes wonder if such campaigns are still needed. The answer is yes—but not just for one week. Raising awareness is a continuous commitment.

Ultimately, success is when your employees tell you they feel recognised and valued—not as numbers on a payroll, but as human beings. When people are happy at work, when they feel understood and supported, when care and compassion are embedded in the culture—that’s when you know you’re making progress.

A Healthy Workplace Culture Costs Nothing

It isn’t rocket science. Building a healthy workplace culture requires attention, consistency, and a genuine desire to care. And best of all, it costs nothing. This is a zero-budget strategy—and who doesn’t love that?

But it must be real. People know when a company’s values are just words on a wall. To create a culture that truly supports mental health and reduces stress, organisations must actively demonstrate they care. That means treating employees with decency, fairness, and genuine consideration—day in, day out.

Receiving an MBE has renewed my drive and commitment. The journey continues. Together, let’s keep raising the flag for mental health—every single day.

Based in the UK, Carole is a highly respected and sought-after motivational keynote speaker, delivering powerful presentations across the Middle East, Europe, and beyond. She captivates global audiences with expert insights on stress management, resilience, burnout, and workplace culture – empowering leaders with practical strategies to build mentally healthy, high-performing organisations.

How to Book a Motivational Speaker

How to book a motivational speaker is a question many event organisers ask when planning a leadership conference, company away day, or training session. The right speaker can transform your event from good to unforgettable.

This guide walks you through each step so you can book with confidence.

1. Define Your Event Goals

Start by deciding what you want to achieve. Do you want to inspire change, boost team morale, or build leadership skills? Being clear on your goals will help you choose a speaker who matches your vision. For example, a leadership-focused speaker can inspire managers, while a resilience expert can motivate teams through change.

2. Set Your Budget

Motivational speaker fees vary. They depend on the speaker’s experience, profile, and travel requirements. Leadership specialists may charge more due to their niche expertise. Setting your budget early makes it easier to shortlist the right people.

3. Search by Specialism and Style

Look for speakers with proven success in leadership, team-building, or cultural change. Read their profiles and watch video clips. Decide whether you want an interactive, humorous, or thought-provoking delivery. When you know how to book a motivational speaker, matching style to audience is just as important as choosing the topic.

4. Work with a Trusted Speaker Bureau

A bureau like Inspirational Speakers takes the hard work out of your search. We match you with speakers who fit your goals, handle all the logistics, and make the process stress-free. Our team knows which speakers connect best with different audiences.

5. Shortlist and Review

Once you have a shortlist, watch each speaker’s showreel and read their testimonials. Ask your bureau to check availability and hold potential dates. You can even arrange a short call to see if the chemistry feels right.

6. Confirm the Booking

When you’ve chosen your speaker, your bureau will confirm contracts, technical requirements, and liaise with the venue. By following these steps, you’ll know exactly how to book a motivational speaker and be ready to look forward to an engaging, impactful event.

Need help finding the perfect motivational speaker?
The team at Inspirational Speakers is here to guide you from first idea to final applause. Whether you’re still deciding how to book a motivational speaker or already have someone in mind, we make the process simple and enjoyable.

Frequently Asked Questions

We recommend at least 2–3 months ahead, especially for high-demand speakers. For larger events, six months or more gives you the best choice.

Absolutely. Many of our speakers deliver engaging online keynotes and workshops tailored to remote teams.

Consider your event goals, audience size, industry, and the tone you’re aiming for. A speaker bureau can guide you to the perfect match.

There are many ways you can book a speaker, but using a speaker bureau or agency is perhaps the most effective way.
This is because we work with you in the lead up to your event to ensure the best possible speaker and handle any and all requirements that come with the booking.

We are paid a commission by our speakers when we book them, so there is no fee to our clients.

Essentially, a bureaus role is to listen to your needs, and create a customized proposal for your event, take care of all the details including travel arrangements, pre-event calls, logistics and more.

We represent a diverse range of speakers, including Motivational & Inspirational Speakers, Business & Leadership Experts, Industry Professionals, Athletes & Celebrities, Thought Leaders & Innovators, Wellbeing & Mental Health Advocates

The speaker’s fee typically includes their speaking time, briefing call and preparation. Any necessary travel and accommodation expenses will be discussed prior to securing the booking and we will provide a clear breakdown of what’s included when you book.

The main bookings we get asked for is for speakers to deliver an keynote talk.
However lots of clients also ask for workshops/interactive sessions, hosting and facilitating events, panel and fireside chats, award evenings and anything else that may be required to make your event one to remember.

While many of our speakers are incredibly inspirational, we offer a much wider range – from leadership experts, mental health advocates and adventurers, to entrepreneurs, change-makers and elite athletes. Whether you’re looking to inspire, educate or provoke thought, we’ve got someone for you.

Not at all – we’re based in the UK but regularly support international clients and events. If you’re planning something overseas or hybrid, we can absolutely help.

How Much Do Motivational Speakers Cost?

If you’re planning an event and considering hiring an motivational speaker, one of the first questions you’re likely to ask is: how much do motivational speakers cost?

Here’s a straightforward breakdown of typical fees and what affects them.

Typical Fee Ranges in the UK

  • Emerging speakers or local professionals: £500 – £1,500

  • Mid-level professional speakers: £2,000 – £5,000

  • High-profile personalities or TV names: £5,000 – £10,000+

  • Celebrity speakers or global figures: £10,000 – £50,000+

These are ballpark figures, and we always aim to work within your budget.
Most bureaus and agencies typically work with speakers that start at £1000+.

Factors That Influence the Cost

1. Speaker Profile
The more established or in-demand a speaker is, the higher their fee.

2. Event Type and Audience
A national leadership summit may cost more than a small team training session.

3. Preparation Time and Customisation
If the speaker needs to tailor content, create new material, or attend pre-event calls, this can affect fees if going direct with speakers.
However when booking through a bureau, fees are set to include this.
If you are looking to book a speaker for more than a keynote – such as a workshop or interactive session as well, then this will be charged differently.
At Inspirational Speakers, we can provide the fees for keynotes, half days and full days upfront so you can make an informed decision.

4. Travel and Accommodation
If the event is outside their local area, additional costs may apply for travel and overnight stays.

What’s Included in the Fee?

When working with a bureau, the fee includes:

  • A pre-event briefing call

  • Delivery of the talk or session

  • Some post-event engagement (if agreed in advance)

  • Basic travel costs (sometimes, but not always)

Always check the specifics with your speaker or bureau.

Booking Through a Bureau Adds Value

At Inspirational Speakers, we’re transparent about speaker fees and help you find the best fit for your goals and budget. We’ll also handle all the logistics, saving you time and hassle.

Want a quick quote or help finding the right speaker? Drop us a message – we’re always happy to help.

The Mistake Paradox: Why Leaders Must Unlearn Perfect Performance – Karem Roitman

This month we worked with Luminate Education, who booked the fabulous Karem Roitman to challenge the “exam mindset” that deeply ingrained belief that mistakes are failures.
From drawing cats wrong on purpose to rethinking how we define success, Karem explores why the leaders of tomorrow must unlearn perfectionism and embrace intentional, intelligent risk.

The Mistake Paradox: Why Leaders Must Unlearn Perfect Performance

During my recent keynote for Luminate Education, facilitated by Inspirational Speakers, I challenged a room full of educational leaders with a simple but profound question: What if everything we’ve taught about avoiding mistakes is holding back innovation and growth?

We’ve created a generation of leaders terrified of being wrong. Our education system, built on the foundation of standardised testing and perfect scores, has inadvertently programmed us to avoid mistakes at all costs. But here’s the uncomfortable truth: the very thing our schools taught us to fear is exactly what innovation demands.

The Exam Mindset That’s Killing Innovation

Traditional education rewards getting things right the first time. Students learn to memorise, regurgitate, and optimise for correct answers. This creates what I call the “exam mindset” – a deeply ingrained belief that mistakes signal failure rather than learning opportunities. When these students become leaders, they carry this risk-averse programming into boardrooms and strategy sessions, creating cultures where playing it safe becomes the norm.

The result? Organisations that innovate only incrementally, teams that second-guess creative solutions, and leaders who choose predictable mediocrity over uncertain breakthroughs.

However, true leadership isn’t about avoiding mistakes – it’s about making them intentionally and learning faster than your competition. This requires a fundamental shift in how we think about risk. Instead of asking “How can we avoid failure?” the question becomes “How can we overcome the fear of falling?”

This mindset shift starts with leaders modelling vulnerability and demonstrating that mistakes aren’t career-ending events, but rather data points that inform better decisions.

The Cat Exercise: Making Mistakes on Purpose

In my Luminate Education keynote, I challenged the audience with a simple but revealing exercise: “Draw a cat while making as many mistakes as possible.” The room initially erupted in nervous laughter – the instruction seemed contradictory. How do you intentionally make mistakes?

But that’s precisely the point. The exercise forces us to confront fundamental questions: What actually constitutes a mistake? What are the essential elements that make a cat recognisably feline? When does creative interpretation become error?

Participants discovered that many perceived “mistakes” were simply alternative choices. A cat with three legs isn’t wrong – it’s different. A purple cat challenges convention but remains conceptually valid. The exercise revealed that our definition of mistakes is often far narrower than reality demands.

This principle extends far beyond artistic exercises. When teams are encouraged to explore “wrong” approaches, they often uncover breakthrough solutions hiding in unexpected places. The key is creating structured environments where calculated risks feel safe, while simultaneously embracing the diverse perspectives that different cultures, languages, and neurodivergent thinkers bring to the table.

A team member who approaches problems through the lens of a different cultural framework isn’t making a mistake – they’re offering alternative pathways to solutions. Similarly, neurodivergent thinkers often see patterns and connections that traditional approaches miss entirely. What appears as “getting it wrong” to conventional thinking may actually be getting it brilliantly right from a different vantage point.

Leaders can implement several strategies:

Failure Parties: Celebrate projects that didn’t work but generated valuable insights. Make learning from failure as prestigious as achieving success.

Assumption Audits: Regularly challenge fundamental assumptions about your industry, customers, or processes. Ask “What if the opposite were true?”

Prototype Everything: Create low-stakes environments where teams can test unconventional ideas without career consequences.

The Ethics of Intentional Mistakes

Encouraging risk-taking isn’t about reckless abandon – it’s about thoughtful experimentation. Leaders must distinguish between intelligent risks that advance learning and careless mistakes that can cause harm. This requires developing ethical frameworks that protect people while promoting innovation.

This transformation must extend to educational leaders who have the power to reshape how future generations approach learning and risk. Schools that continue to prioritise standardised test scores over creative problem-solving are preparing students for a world that no longer exists. Educational leaders must courageously redesign curricula that reward innovative thinking.

Leading the Charge

The leaders who thrive in an uncertain future are those who can unlearn the exam mindset and embrace the mistake paradox. They understand that in a rapidly changing world, the biggest risk is not taking any risks at all.

Start small. Draw your cat. Make your mistakes. And watch as your organisation discovers the creative courage hiding beneath years of playing it safe.
